Why does birth time matter in astrology?
The short answer
The planets' signs barely change in a day, but the sky turns a full circle every 24 hours. Your birth time decides your rising sign, which house each planet falls in and, on some days, your Moon sign.
A little more detail
A chart without a time still shows the planets in their signs, which is useful. With the time, it also shows where in your life each of those energies plays out: work, home, love, friendships and so on.
Even a time that is off by 15 to 30 minutes can move the rising sign or a house cusp, so the more exact the time, the more precise the reading.
Where to look in your own chart
- Birth certificate: many countries record the time on the full version.
- Hospital records or your parents' baby book.
- Family memory: a rough time (morning, around lunch) is better than nothing, but say it is approximate.
Questions people ask
Can I get a birth chart without a birth time?
Yes. The planets in signs and their aspects can still be read. The rising sign and houses need a time to be accurate.
How accurate does my birth time need to be?
Within a few minutes is ideal. Within half an hour is usually fine for most of the chart, but the rising sign can change if you were born near a boundary.
Does the birth place matter too?
Yes. The place sets the horizon and the time zone, which together fix your rising sign and houses.
