What is a birth chart, and what does it show?
The short answer
A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were at the exact moment and place you were born. It shows each planet in a sign, in a house, and in conversation with the others.
A little more detail
Think of it in three layers. The planets are the parts of you (mind, feelings, drive, love). The signs describe how each part tends to act. The houses describe where in life it shows up.
The angles between planets, called aspects, show which parts of you work easily together and which ones pull in different directions. That is where most of the nuance in a chart comes from.
Where to look in your own chart
- Your big three: Sun, Moon and rising sign.
- Your balance of elements (fire, earth, air, water): which ones you have plenty of and which are missing.
- Your tightest aspects: the strongest conversations between planets.
Questions people ask
What do I need to make a birth chart?
Your birth date, birth time and birth place. The time and place matter for the rising sign and houses.
Is a birth chart the same as a horoscope?
Not quite. A daily horoscope is usually written for a Sun sign. A birth chart is personal to your exact birth moment.
Does my birth chart change over time?
No. Your natal chart is fixed at birth. Astrologers compare it with the current sky to talk about phases, but the chart itself stays the same.
How long does it take to understand a chart?
The basics (big three and elements) take minutes. A full reading of every planet, house and aspect is a longer piece of writing.
