TradeLine for mechanics

Under a car when the phone rings?

Your hands are covered in grease and the phone rings out. TradeLine texts the caller straight away, asks for the vehicle, what it needs and whether it's safe to drive, and sends you the lot in one SMS. You keep your own number.

Why mechanics lose jobs to missed calls

Mechanics miss calls all day: under a hoist, on a road test, talking to a customer at the counter. A missed caller with a warning light on the dash usually rings the next workshop on Google.

With the make, model and the problem in hand, you can call back with a rough idea of parts and a time to bring it in, instead of starting from scratch.

The texts your customer gets

These are the questions TradeLine sends for mechanics, word for word. The business and the names are an example.

If they call, they first hear: "Sorry, Ridge Auto can't get to the phone right now. We'll send you a text message in a moment."

Hi, it's Ridge Auto. Sorry we missed your call! A few quick questions so Mick can call you back ready. What's your name?
Jess
Thanks! What's the vehicle? Make, model and year (rego too if handy).
2015 Corolla hatch
What do you need done? E.g. service, brakes, warning light, a noise, or it won't start.
Brakes are squealing
Last one: is it safe to drive, and when is a good time for Mick to call you?
Yes, drivable. After 2 today
Thanks! Mick has your details and will call you back as soon as possible. If you've broken down somewhere unsafe, call your roadside assistance.
And you get:
Missed call - Ridge Auto
From: +61412345678
Name: Jess
Vehicle: 2015 Corolla hatch
Needs: Brakes are squealing
Drivable / call time: Yes, drivable. After 2 today
Call them back: +61412345678

Texts go to callers on Australian mobile numbers. Anyone else (a landline, an overseas number) hears: "Sorry, Ridge Auto can't get to the phone right now. Please call back a bit later, or send a text to this number."

An hour later a reminder SMS follows, so no job slips through. If someone calls again within 4 hours, they don't get the questions twice: we just let you know they called again.

How it works

1. Customer rings you

They call your normal mobile, same as always. If you pick up, nothing changes.

2. You can't answer

After about 20 seconds, or if you're on another call, your phone company passes the call to your TradeLine number. Within seconds the caller gets a text from you.

3. You get the job

They answer 4 quick questions by text, and you get one SMS with everything you need to call back ready.

Fair questions

What does TradeLine ask my customers?

Four short questions written for mechanics, one text at a time: name, vehicle, needs, drivable / call time. The answers come to your mobile in one SMS.

Can I change the questions?

On Standard you get the questions shown here. On Pro we set up your own wording for you.

Do I have to change my number?

No. Customers keep calling your normal mobile. TradeLine only steps in when you don't answer.

Does it use AI?

No. Every message is written in advance, so nothing is made up on the fly and nothing weird gets sent in your name.
